ANN ARBOR, Mich. — In a dramatic turn that has sent shockwaves through college football, former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was taken into police custody Wednesday evening, only hours after the university announced his firing for an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Moore, who has been tied to the Michigan Wolverines program since 2018, was detained in Saline and is currently being held at the Washtenaw County Jail. According to the Pittsfield Township Police Department, his detention is connected to an ongoing assault investigation. Police have not released further details, and no formal charges have yet been filed.
Earlier in the afternoon, officers responded to the listed address of a female Michigan football staffer at 4:10 p.m. Dispatch records also show police were sent to Moore’s residence shortly after. The dual response quickly raised questions across the college football world, fueling an already-growing story surrounding the now-former head coach.
Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed Moore’s dismissal, stating that a university investigation uncovered credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship between Moore and a staff member. Manuel emphasized that the conduct was a clear violation of university policy and that Michigan maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.
Moore, 39, had just wrapped up his second season as head coach, leading Michigan to a 17-8 record during his tenure and a 9-3 finish this season. Prior to taking over the program, he served as an assistant coach under Jim Harbaugh from 2018 to 2023 and was considered one of the rising figures in college football coaching.
With the Citrus Bowl against Texas looming on Dec. 31, associate head coach Biff Poggi has been named the interim head coach. The Wolverines now face a postseason challenge overshadowed by one of the most unexpected scandals in recent program history.
This developing story continues to dominate headlines as fans, analysts, and college football insiders search for answers in a week that has reshaped Michigan football’s future.
